Fire Captain Charged with DUI, Hit and Run

Long Beach Fire Capt. John Hines, 38, of Huntington Beach was officially charged last week with three felony counts for driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury and hit-and-run with injury.

Hines was driving his Chevrolet truck when he allegedly swerved into the bike lane on Westminster Avenue in Seal Beach, and collided with bicyclist Jeffrey Gordon.  The bicyclist was thrown 70 feet in the air, suffering serious injuries including head and spine trauma, he was hospitalized for two weeks.   Hines allegedly continued driving, and never even stepped on the brakes, according to prosecutors.   Hines was followed to his home by two motorists who called police; Hines was arrested about two hours after the accident.   According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office Hines had a blood alcohol level of .24.   Hines has been suspended by the Long Beach Fire Department without pay pending the outcome of an investigation.   If convicted Hines faces a maximum penalty of six years and eight months in state prison.   Hines remains free on $50,000 bail.
